Osaka

Arriving 5th August…

This month we’re heading to Osaka – affectionally coined the ‘kitchen of Japan’, and a city we’ve been hungrily waiting to visit!
As with neighbouring Kyoto, it has a rich history that dates back centuries, and there’s plenty to see there. Visit the Shitennoji, one of Japan’s oldest temples, or the imposing Osaka Castle for a real slice of history, or step back in time with a trip to the bustling stone-paved alleys of Hozenji Yokocho, with its abundance of traditional shops, tiny restaurants and buzzing street food scene.
Here you’ll find some of Osaka’s most famous dishes, and some of our favourites too. From delicious Okonomiyaki – a loaded savoury pancake like you’ve never tasted before, to crispy Takoyaki octopus balls (which we also serve in the restaurant), and deep-fried Kushikatsu skewers.
Other highlights include a trip to the lively district of Dotonburi, known for its bustling nightlife, neon lights and healthy share of drool-worthy eateries. Here, you can sample everything from fresh seafood to savoury grilled skewers, whilst soaking up the lively atmosphere of this eclectic suburb.
It’s also home to some seriously fun shop fronts advertising their wares, including a popular crab restaurant chain called Kani Doraku, complete with a giant mechanical crab positioned at its entrance.
Fish and seafood lovers will love a trip to Kuromon Market, and for those looking for something a little more refined, Osaka is also home to some of Japan’s finest dining establishments, where you can savour exquisite sushi, hearty ramen, and delicate kaiseki cuisine.
It’s also home to the House of Suntory distillery for Roku gin, which you can visit to find out more about all the botanicals that create its unique flavour.
For this month’s special cocktail, we’ve paired up with another House of Suntory spirit, Haku vodka, and have created a fizzy little number using Akashi-Tai sparkling sake and Maraschino cherry liquor – the Kaburi Fizz!

Osaka food specials

Mention Osaka to anyone and they immediately list all of their favourite Japanese street food… and who are we to veer off that tradition!
Of course Takoyaki is on the list, it’s one of Japan’s most loved dishes, hence we have it on the menu all year round, but there are also a couple of other strong contenders that our chefs want to introduce you to in their specials menu this year.

The famous Okonomiyaki is one of them, and for good reason. These delicious savoury pancakes are cooked teppanyaki style on a metal hot plate, loaded with grated cabbage and a range of other meat, fish or vegetable toppings, then finished with bonito flakes and a healthy drizzle of umami-rich okonomiyaki sauce.
Dive into KIBOU’s version at both our Cheltenham and our Battersea restaurants, each topped with fresh prawns.

Or why not try our take on a traditional Kushikatsu. Also known as kushiage, these deep-fried skewers of meat, fish and vegetables originated in the Shinsekai district of Osaka and are now a hit right across Japan. Cambridge are serving a tender Gyu-kushikatsu, featuring panko-fried beef sirloin skewers with home-made tonkatsu sauce, whilst Cheltenham have opted for a Mussel version, served with a mustard miso, wasabi tobiko, and wasabi mayo.

Or if you want to taste a range of Kushikatsu styles, then Solihull are offering a mixed selection of prawn, chicken and veg panko fried skewers, served with tonkatsu sauce and spicy mayo.

We’ve also got some Osaka-style udon noodle dishes, with Tempura Udon on the menu in Cheltenham, featuring prawn and veg tempura served in a rich broth with naruto, inari pocket, toasted nori, spring onion, served with ebi & yasai tempura naruto, inari pocket, toasted nori and spring onion. Plus Cambridge has a delicious Kitsune Udon, served with bonito broth, deep-fried sweet tofu, narutomaki and spring onion.

For those looking for a sushi take on Osaka, there’s plenty to choose from as well. From our Osaka California roll in Battersea – an 8-piece spicy tuna roll, topped with seared tuna and dotted with sriracha and micro coriander. Or our pressed Ebi Hakozushi, with steamed king prawn, shiso, pickled ginger, marinated ikura, mango salsa and coriander.

Then to finish off your meal, Cheltenham are showcasing a summer dessert that’s hugely popular at festival rights across Japan, the Kakigori. Inspired by Garuru Ko-ri, the first kakigori specialty shop in Osaka, this refreshing bowl of shaved ice is served with sweet syrup, and then topped with mango & passionfruit syrup and cream.
