Yokohama

As we conclude our culinary tour of Japan, we arrive at the final stopover in our 2024 Passport to Japan campaign, Yokohama. Japan’s 2nd largest city just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is a bustling port city, in fact it was one of the first ports in Japan to open up to foreign trade, which explains its rich history of neighbouring cultures and strong influence from the West.
A key landmark in the city to visit is the aptly named, Yokohama Landmark Tower, offering breathtaking views from its sky-high observatory point. Or for a taste of history, head to Sankeien Garden, a tranquil oasis boasting stunning seasonal foliage and historic buildings relocated from across Japan.
Yokohama is also famous for having the largest Chinatown in Japan, plus – and this may be slightly more surprising, it also hosts its own Oktoberfest where you can sample a range of German and local beers.
There are plenty of foodie highlights to enjoy in Yokohama too. It’s home to the Shokupan – also known as Hokkaido milk bread, and the Uchiki Pan bakery which was the first place in Japan to sell this style of bread, and has been making it for a further 130 years!
You’ll also find a plethora of dining options across the city to suit every palate. From rich and savoury ramen to delicate sushi, mouth-watering dim sum and steamed buns found in the many restaurants housed in the city’s large Chinatown.

Yokohama food specials

If you’re a fan of sukiyaki, then you’re going to love Yokohama’s own version of the dish — Gyunabe. A traditional Japanese hotpot with sirloin beef and tofu in a sweet and salty soy sauce-based broth, served with veggies, mushrooms, leafy greens and shirataki noodles. Enjoy a heart-warming bowl of this classic in Solihull and Cheltenham, who also serve the dish with a raw egg on the side for dipping the beef before you eat.
Cambridge is celebrating the region’s famous Misaki tuna, the general name for tuna that land at Misaki Port located further down the Miura Peninsula. Misaki Port is known as one of the best tuna fishing ports in Japan and the location of Japan’s first tuna auction held during the Edo period. Enjoy their Misaki Tuna Ramen, featuring seared tuna sashimi in a bonito broth with adjitsuke tamago, spring onion, beni shoga and furikake. Or a Tuna Zuke Don, with soy marinated tuna, furikake rice, daikon, wasabi, shiso and tamago.
Yokohama is also the birthplace of ice cream in Japan, with the first ice cream reportedly sold in 1869 in Bashamichi, a trendy Yokohama neighbourhood. Cheltenham are celebrating this with a deliciously rich homemade sweet and salty Miso Ice Cream served with a choux pastry case & warm miso butter sauce.
